2023 Sustainability Report and ESG Summary
published by Alfa Acciai Group
In a year marked by a slowdown in the European steel market, the Alfa Acciai Group continues to strengthen its sustainability strategy, which has guided its actions since its founding 70 years ago.
Despite challenges related to decreasing demand, significantly higher national energy costs compared to other European countries and a chronic shortage of scrap in Italy, the Alfa Acciai Group maintained production volumes at 1.5 million tons, distributed an economic value of €1.1 billion (within the relevant scope) and confirmed its solid financial standing. The shareholders' equity of the Group stands at €536 million, while its net financial position has seen a significant improvement.
The Group's net investments increased by 18%, reaching €48 million, most of which were directed toward ESG-related projects, in line with its plan for renewal, efficiency and sustainability, as illustrated in the 2023 ESG Summary.
The Alfa Acciai Group's investment plan aims to improve safety standards, enhance environmental performance and ensure high production flexibility and efficiency across its product range by introducing the most advanced technological solutions.
The 2023 Sustainability Report not only provides the economic data and governance elements that define us, but also highlights part of the aforementioned investments and the achievements of the Group. In the environmental field, we note the certification of the Carbon Footprint Organization for the entire Group and the operation of the Alfa Heat Recovery plant, which recovers heat from the steel plant for Brescia's district heating system.
In line with previous sustainability reports, prepared according to GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) guidelines, the report and its Summary emphasize continuous improvement in managing environmental matrices, including an increase in the percentage of waste intended for recovery, a reduction in CO₂ emissions intensity (Scope 1 and 2) and improvements in energy efficiency.
On the social front, Alfa Acciai has embarked on the path to obtain gender equality certification, reaffirming its commitment to the values of equity and inclusion. Additionally, the "Alfa Academy" project has been launched, aimed at training young talent and creating highly specialized professionals.
This sustainability journey, begun 70 years ago, is now reinforced by the new claim of the Alfa Acciai Group: "All-round sustainability for 70 years”.
