Alfa Acciai Group publishes its 2020 Sustainability Report

The Alfa Acciai Group has published its first Sustainability Report, a well-established tool used by an increasing number of industry players to inform stakeholders about company performance in economic, social and environmental terms. The scope of reporting includes all companies operating within the Alfa Acciai Group i.e., Alfa Acciai and its subsidiaries Acciaierie di Sicilia, Alfa Derivati, Ferro Berica and Tecnofil.

This company report have been produced in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards and the sections cover  the main reporting areas defined internationally, and concern initiatives adopted for transparent governance, environmental responsibility, the circularity of production processes, social responsibility, caring for people and local communities, and quality assurance strategies.

Among the various topics, the Alfa Acciai Group's first Sustainability Report summarises the commitment and sensitivity that the company has brought to its business in relation to environmental sustainability and the circular economy. This has produced solid results, such as the high percentage (>97%) of post-consumer recycled material contained in the products coming from companies in the Group, and the ongoing commitment to maximising the value of all waste coming from production processes.

The Sustainability Report also lists ongoing projects. These include Smart Grid Pilot, a key research programme carried out in partnership with A2A Calore e Servizi, Brescia University and District Heating Planet, with the support of the Lombardy Regional Government, which authorised the commencement of testing on a system to recover heat from the steel mill and transfer it to the Brescia city district heating network. The project will be fully implemented in the coming years, and will enable heat recovery up to 20 MWt for an amount of approximately  60,000 MWh/year, equivalent to the requirements of 6,000 similar flats.

The creation of the Alfa Acciai Observatory Unit is further testimony to the company's long-established focus on the areas in which it operates, in particular the Brescia and Catania districts. This working party was set up in 2007 and is coordinated by Brescia Council. It has various members, including representatives from the local community and authorities, and is responsible for regularly communicating the environmental impact of the site, assessing its performance, gathering reports from the public, and discussing solutions. The work results in a regular summary report, and the most recent version was published in June 2021.

The Sustainability Report commences with a Letter to Stakeholders signed by Chairman Ettore Lonati and CEO Amato Stabiumi, stating that:

"environmental, social and economic sustainability permeates all of our tasks and strategies, be it new investment or procedural change, because it has always been in our corporate culture, and is guaranteed by a stable shareholder base and professional management team, and we thank everyone working in the Group for having taken it on board."
